5 Northern Exchange Hotel
It was at this location that Eber Barrows built his log shanty for travelers. All he needed to open the first “hotel” in the area was to pay the $18.00 license fee and provide a spare bed and stabling for two teams of horses. This was replaced by a frame structure in 1848. At one time it housed the Post Office. The Hotel became widely known and was a popular meeting place for the young people in town. In 1861, the hotel was sold by Mr. Barrows to B.P. Ackerman who kept it until 1875, then selling it to Richard Mose. Mr. Morse converted it to a residence as it has been that way since. The building retains its historical lines but a side porch on the north side was been removed.
